To build or not to build...a NAS

Synology ds1513+

Synology ds1513+

I have been using a dedicated NAS (Network Attached Storage) device at my home for many years. The device that I chose back then was the Drobo FS.  I mainly use this as a location for backups due to the relatively slow speed of the Drobo. My original idea was to use the Drobo as a file server too, but as I stated, the slow internal speed of the Drobo made this impractical. I have other servers that I can use for file sharing, so I didn't complain....Much.
Move forward several years, and I'm now looking at replacing the Drobo with another NAS device. I've even considered building my own NAS/Server from scratch using FreeNAS or CentOS. However, after reading the reviews of the Synology DS1513+, I decided that it would meet all of my needs plus more.
My list of want include:
1. Drive failure tolerance.
2. Robust hardware/software combination.
3. Speedy network performance.
4. Ease of set up.
5. Integration with existing devices on the network. (File sharing/Storage)
The ds1513+ met all of these needs, plus has the ability to share a music library via iTunes sharing, and will let me stream movies via Plex media server.
Next Week: The set up.
