D-Day + 70 years

Today in history 70 years ago, soldiers from the Allied nations started pouring onto the beaches of Normandy, France in an attempt to push Hitler's forces out of France and bring to a close one of the most costly and devastating wars that has ever been waged. The G.I.'s that did this were going in to hell on earth as they disembarked from their troop carriers and made it across the beaches. The enemy had set up formidable defenses that gave them a superior position from which to attack the Allied troops trying to establish a beachhead.
You can read about the D-Day invasion in a well written book by Stephen E. Ambrose called: "D Day: June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II".
It's a thrilling book that covers all of the details from the lead up, to the execution of the largest armada that has ever been assembled. It also gives insight in to what the soldiers went through before and during the day of the battle. It's truly a fascinating read.
